Home to Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, and his descendants, this internationally important property has for over 200 years been known colloquially as 'No 1 London', as it was the first house to be encountered after passing the tollgates at the top of Knightsbridge.
When the seventh Duke of Wellington gave the house to the nation in 1947, together with its magnificent collections, the family retained the private rooms, which they use to this day. This maintains the family's historic association with the house and makes Apsley House the only property managed by English Heritage in which the original owners' family still live.
