Masterpieces in The Museum of Ancient Art
The Museum of Ancient Art is an important part of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
This visit will allow us to review the great names in Northern European painting. We have chosen 25 works by celebrated artists that illustrate a certain period or a style.
We will begin with the magnificent works of the 15th-century Flemish painters, including Roger van der Weyden and Hans Memling. We also discuss less well-known painters such as Dirk Bouts, Quentin Metsys, the Master of Flémalle and the Master of Moulins. These will give us a better understanding of primitive Flemish art.
We will also, of course, spend a good bit of time with Hieronymus Bosch’s works, particularly his Triptych of the Temptation of St. Anthony.
The 16th century will also be well represented by artists such as Lucas Cranach the Elder and Pieter Brueghel the Elder – in particular the latter’s famous Census at Bethlehem and Winter Landscape with Skaters. Our stimulating review of Northern painting will end in the 17th century, where we will study the works of great Baroque artists like Rubens, and Dutch masters such as Rembrandt and Franz Hals.
